Located in the village of Assagao, Villa Cardo is a 4BHK villa in North Goa that blends contemporary elegance with the rich architectural heritage of the region—a thoughtful balance between the old and the new. Inspired by both Portuguese and indigenous Goan design, it is an ideal holiday home for those seeking comfort and sophistication amid a lush, natural setting.
Its design is distinguished by its integration with the steep, sloping site and surrounding landscape. Set on a plot with varied levels, it utilises the terrain to create outdoor spaces that transition between different heights. The villa itself is spread across two floors: the service areas occupy the lower level, while the main living spaces and private pool are situated on the upper floors, maximising the elevation for sunlight and views of tropical flora.
A key feature of this luxury villa in Assagao is its dramatic entrance. Upon arrival, visitors are greeted by a shaded balcão, a traditional Indo-Portuguese element flanked by columns. This leads into a double-height lobby that connects the two wings of the house via an overhead bridge. This architectural detail not only enhances the sense of space but also adds a striking visual element. The interiors continue this theme of openness with high ceilings, large windows, and glass doors that flood the home with natural light and ventilation.
The dining room and living area, considered the heart of the home, feature arched doors of solid teakwood and a sculpted, scalloped ceiling. They open onto a spacious porch, which then leads to a large back garden. A distinctive laterite staircase connects the various levels organically, guiding you to the pool, where a century-old banyan tree stands as a natural canopy. The pool is also accessible from the entryway and the first-floor bedroom. These elements reflect the overarching philosophy of Goan architecture: a home in harmony with nature.
The materials used in Villa Cardo were chosen to honour India’s craftsmanship while providing modern comfort and luxury. The muted flooring in the common areas combines Banswara marble, green Shabad stone, and green Kota stone, while the bedrooms feature hand-poured cement tiles crafted using age-old techniques from southern India. Each tile has a unique pattern, ensuring no two are alike. The design also incorporates facets of Gothicism, such as the jack-arched ceilings in the living room and one of the bedrooms, as well as Romanesque light fixtures. Despite these aspects, the ambience of the space is one of minimalism and modernity.
The bathrooms maintain this motif of subtle luxury, each one unique and set in different shades of Indian Patent Stone, a traditional cement-based plaster. Skylights and tall windows allow light to filter through the Mangalore-tiled roof, enhancing the overall ambience and drawing attention to the handmade terrazzo flooring and wash basins, the latter of which were inspired by the state’s topography and crafted from local marble. One bathroom even incorporates elements of church architecture, with a domed ceiling that adds a sense of grandeur.
This villa in Goa with a private pool combines charm and convenience to create a quiet and delightful getaway. With a dedicated staff attending to daily needs, it serves as a retreat for those seeking relief from urban fatigue. Blending thoughtful design, natural beauty, and cultural inspiration, Villa Cardo embodies the essence of refined living in the centre of Goa.
